Great old style movie house with reasonable prices and first run movies.

After moving away from the area for several years and then recently returning, I was excited to take my husband to the quaint little theater that I grew up watching movies in. It was a big disappointment. We were ‘greeted’ at the window by a fella with zero people skills. He barely uttered the price of the tickets. We went to the balcony first but decided to go sit in the main part of the auditorium. We were surprised to find trash bags covering several seats and the wainscoting coming off in large pieces. The fabric on the walls was dirty and had holes on it with no sort of attempt at repairs. My husband sat down and almost fell completely backwards - we were thankful no one sat directly behind him. We didn’t even splurge on snacks (which we had planned on) due to the lack of customer service up front. The tickets are priced great and the bathrooms were spotless, but if you’re looking for an experience, go on to Asheville or Johnson City. It broke my heart to see things falling apart. I’m all for supporting my local businesses - especially after living in a larger city for 10+ years - but when the owners don’t seem to care about the place, it makes it hard. Fabric and wood paneling aren’t expensive repairs and personality doesn’t cost a dime. I just hope by the time my daughter is big enough for her first movie I can take her where I saw mine without the fear of her falling through a chair.

A cool old theater. Remember to bring cash. My grandkids really enjoy going here. It's a great date night place too. Very affordable.

We have been coming to Yancey Theatre for years. We have 2 smaller children and I always carry a small Vera type bag with side pockets for our girls drinks and toys. Upon entering tonight, my girls were begging for popcorn. I bought a large bag for $5. The cashier asked if I wasn't going to buy a drink. I said I didn't need one. She then said we are required to check large bags for security reasons. I easily didn't hesitate and handed her my bag. When I opened the top and she saw my girls drinks, she said no carry in drinks were allowed and I would have to leave with them. She was really rude about it. The funny part was she never even checked the rest of my bag besides just looking at those drinks. If she was so worried about the safety for the theater, why would she not have looked into the bag. The main reason is the same reason everyone calls our family the American family. We are clean cut, cause no trouble, have very well mannered children and are always trying to find the good in everybody. We just did not buy their drinks and that upset them. We took our popcorn and our kids drinks to the car and ate it in the car. We then went back in to watch The Star. It would have been a great movie everyone's cell phones hadn't been dinging. By the way Yancey Theater FYI, upon leaving, we noticed 13 people had brought in drinks that obviously you overlooked while trying to pin us down. We saw our last movie here tonight. I just will not tolerate being treated like I was treated in that business tonight.

Been a part of life here since 1939. Survived television, DVDs and a conversion to digital projection. One of the few movie theaters that still has a balcony, albeit a tight fit.
